Correction.
In the April Newsletter, support from the magazines Scope and Computer
Graphics World and from Leonardo Electronic Art News/Fine Art Forum for
the compilation of our Calendar, should also have been mentioned in the
paper version. We are sorry for the omission.
ISEA presentation at the WWVF.
During the World Wide Video Festival in The Hague, Holland, ISEA was
represented in several ways. During the Video Market on April 22 and 23,
ISEA had a booth. Results of the International Symposia on Electronic Art
were presented, while information on ISEA and the Fourth International
Symposium on Electronic Art in Minneapolis were handed out. This resulted
in interesting new contacts and a number of new members.
On Friday the 23th, Wim van der Plas gave a lecture on computer animation,
illustrated with many video fragments. The many video artists present,
heard Wim's opinion that there is a lot of hype going on, especially in
the fashionable talk about Virtual Reality. The new technologies are here
to be used by artists, just like stone is there for sculpturers and paint
for painters. "Don't be too impressed by all the media hype, look at the
results". As positive examples, pieces by (among others) Jon McCormack
(Australia) and Andrew Dennis (US) were shown. The second part of that
afternoon session was occupied by a Philips demonstration of Full Motion
CD-I. Due to compression techniques, it is now possible to incorporate 72
minutes of full motion video on a CD-I disk. Philips is interested in
videomakers proposing good ideas for these full motion CD-I's. Anyone
interested in proposals, is invited to contact ISEA.
ISEA/ISAST meeting at SIGGRAPH.
During Siggraph (see the announcement elsewhere), the annual tradition of
a joint meeting of ISEA and ISAST (the International Society for the Arts,
Science & Technology) will be continued. Presentations by FISEA 93 (The
Fourth International Symposium on Electronic Art in Minneapolis), ISEA 94
(The Fifth, in Helsinki) and ISEA 95 (The Sixth, in Montreal) are ex-
pected. Other organizations active in the field of the electronic arts,
will get a chance to present themselves. Details will be published in the
next Newsletter.

DISSEMINATE YOUR ENERGIES IN REAL TIME THROUGH POSITIVE WAVES.
We would like to draw your attention to an installation that will be
realised by the artist Fred Forrest within the framework of the European
Month of Culture in Graez. The installation will incorporate the
general theme "Entegenzte Grenzen" (Dismissed Borders) and function as
leading project. It will open in April and can already be considered as
extraordinary and exemplary.
The technological communication media Fred Forrest is going to install
at the Slovenian border will be placed in such a way that they will look
in the direction of the former Yugoslavian territory and are called
"OBSERVATION TOWERS FOR PEACE".
These technological communication media will consist of five sound
amplifiers connected to computers and the INTERNATIONAL TELEPHONE
NETWORK. The metal structures designed to arry these strong amplifiers
will be erected in Ehrenhausen, directly at the Austrian-Slovenian
border. Through these amplifiers, peace messages are to be emitted in
real-time mode. These peace messages will be transmitted to the
amplifiers via telephone from the whole world over.
A computer will be used to transform the messages via synthesizer into
one collective sound signal. The modulation of this whistling sound
will change in accordance with both the number of incoming phone calls
and the distance from which they come.
There is no doubt that the interaction of Fred Forrest's project and its
symbolic dimension in view of the present geopolitical situation make
the installation a first class media event and emphasize the meaning of
our modern society's new forms of communication.

ISEA MONTREAL 1995 PROPOSAL

This is a proposal to present an international symposium on electronic
arts in Montral during the fall of 1995. The event would be the sixth
edition of ISEA, the International Symposium on Electronic Art which has
been presented previously in Utrecht and Groningen, the Netherlands (1988
and 1990) and Sydney, Australia (1992). Future ISEA's are scheduled for
Minneapolis, USA (1993), and Helsinki, Finland (1994).
This proposal has been prepared by various French and English speaking
artists, educators and researchers in the Montreal area.
INTRODUCTION: ISEA IN MONTREAL
Over the past 30 years, technology has provided contemporary society with
a variety of new electronic media which have instigated major changes in
most aspects of industry and personal life. ISEA Montreal will demonstrate
the cultural importance of these new media to the general public, profes-
sional artists, academics, scientists and businesses from Canada and
abroad.
Montreal is one of the major cities in North America and is very active in
the fields of art and technology. The city contains numerous educational
and public institutions which are exploring the use of new media,
including four major universities (Concordia, McGill, University of
Montral, UQAM), the National Film Board, and the Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation (radio and television). The major industrial corporations who
research and develop advanced electronics equipment in Canada are also
located in Montreal, such as Bombardier, CAE, Bell-Northern Research,
Northern Telecom, BCE, BELL, Softimage, Spar Aerospace, Teleglobe Canada
and Vidotron.
In addition to hosting annual international festivals of dance, theatre,
music, film and video, Montreal recently hosted New Music America 90 and
the International Computer Music Conference (1991), two events which
focusing on music and electronic media. The city is also one of the most
artistically active cities in the country, being home to thousands of
international painters, sculptors, composers, dancers, film makers, video
artists, performers, and writers. The city has exhibition and performance
spaces at major venues, such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Place des arts,
Museum of Contemporary Art, Canadian Centre for Architecture and dozens of
artist run galleries and resource centres for the visual arts, video,
music, performance and dance (PRIM, Videographe, Infographie Canada,
ACREQ).
The one week symposium in Montreal will provide a contemporary overview on
the artistic use of electronic media through various educational, academic
and cultural events. In addition, the symposium's environment will create
valuable links between industry and artists who work with new electronic
media. Resulting from this interaction will be new applications for
computer graphics, telecommunications, electronic audio, interactive
systems and video which will bring sociological and economic benefits to
Montreal, Quebec and Canada.
CULTURAL EVENTS
Exhibitions
Exhibitions will be one of the main activities at ISEA. Various galleries
and museums in Montreal will be involved in exhibiting, selecting work and
creating concepts for the exhibitions. Each exhibition will focus on a
particular style or medium and will include multimedia installations,
hypermedia, computer graphics and electronic sculpture. Some galleries and
museums have already expressed interest in displaying work for the sym-

Performances
Two evenings of live performances will be presented which incorporate
performers with various electronic media. Most of the performances will be
interactive during which the audience or performers will control imagery,
sound and physical objects with sound, body movement or their physio-
logical processes. Chairperson: Don Ritter.
Electronic Music Theatre and Broadcasts
The EMT will be the focus for the dissemination of electroacoustic works.
We hope to include a variety of works selected compositions for tape or CD
formats, radiophonic works, and works for live electroacoustic forces. The
EMT will also serve as a distribution point for the transmission of
electroacoustic materials through campus, community and commercial radio

Electronic Theatre
More than just a cinema screening the best in computer animation, the ISEA
95 Electronic Theatre is a space within which unfold any number of ac-
tivities associated with theatre in the electronic world: performances,
slide shows, readings, and network-based art as well as computer
animations made by independent artists. Chairperson: Louise Poissant
Artists Market
The Artists' Market will provide ISEA participants with an opportunity to
offer their works to other ISEA participants and to the Montreal Community
at large. Similar to a combined music store, bookstore, video club, and
software outlet, the Artists' Market will offer CD-ROM, CDI, CD Audio,
videodisks, videocassettes, disketes, books, and prints for a taste of
what could be an art market of the future. Chairperson,:Luc Courchesne.
ACADEMIC EVENTS
Poster Sessions
The art exhibitions, papers, and panels are judged months before the
conference. Poster Sessions give artists the chance to show work in
progress or work completed since the jury deadlines. It is also a chance
to show slides of work of artists not otherwise represented at the sym-
posium. The Poster Sessions are the up-to-the-minute news breaks from the
front lines of electronic art. Chairperson: Henry See
Panels
ISEA Montreal will sponsor panels as alternative formats for presenting
thought-provoking discussions of ideas, trends, and controversies on a
wide range of topics including interactive art, art and politics, gender
issues, telecommunications, electronic art and the avantgarde.
Participants and audiences alike have an opportunity to explain different
viewpoints and exchange information. Submissions for special sessions that
focus on the cultural, social, political implications and artistic use of
the emerging corporate, commercial and consumer channels of interactive

Papers
Academics and artists the world over will come to Montreal to deliver
papers outlining the latest in the theory and practice of electronic art.
Submitted papers will be appraised by an international jury comprised of
academics, artists, and authors. The papers will be published for
distribution after the conference. Acting chair: Cynthia Beth Rubin
Hypertext
In recognition of significant developments in hypertext as a new literary
form, ISEA Montreal will sponsor a special session on Hypertext. Authors
can submit proposals to present their work in half hour time slots and the
session will close with a special panel discussion of hypertext in the
context of interactive art. Acting chair: Greg Garvey
Electronic Cafe
The Electronic Cafe is a meeting place located in the heart of the con-
ference space, permitting chance encounters and a central place for
attendees to meet and talk. It is also an information exchange, being the
site of the message boards and ongoing announcements. Chairperson, Henry

Publications
Catalogue: The projected 150 page catalogue will devote two pages to
each participating artist: one of photos, the other a short text
describing the artists' work and areas of interest. The catalogue will
also include several longer articles of a theoretical or thematic
character.
Electronic Proceedings: After the conference, the electronic
proceedings will be published on CD-ROM. As well as containing the
textual documentation of the conference (papers, panel resumes, etc),
the publication will include video documentation, reproductions of
slides, and excerpts of video and software-based work where

Telecommunication Events
The Symposium will integrate a range of telecommunication events
to coincide with the week long symposium. Corporate support will
be will be requested to underwrite ISDN links where appropriate. A
call will be made to artists, groups, and organizations to propose
special activities which will include the organization of a global
interactive art network. Activities will include joint creation of
computer graphic images using shared virtual screens,
transcontinental interactive performances, and a virtual and real
global group show where artists can elect to download images either
for temporary screen display or hardcopy output. Chair Ginette

Workshops
The workshops are the practical, hands-on side of the symposium.
Given by artists experienced in the use of these tools for artistic
expression, artist and non-artist alike are invited to explore new uses

VIDEO INSTALLATIONS IN ROMANIA

After the Revolution of December 1989, Romania became very quickly a media
conscious country. The hot debates on the role of the media in the tran-
sitional political period are also reflected in the discourse of the
artists. The Soros Centre for Contemporary Arts office in Bucharest is
monitoring an exhibition ment to express the new relation and also the new
openings brought in the local culture by video.
The Video Installations exhibition organized by SCCA Bucharest will have a
national participation and will be opened from November 24 1993 till
January 9 1994. An international jury will award a prize for the best
contribution. Being the first event of this kind in Romania, the Video
Installation show will have also a promotional/informational function.
International and local theorists and artists will participate in pannel
discussions and workshops arround the exhibition. Institutions like the
Art Academy and the Theater and Film Academy are into this project. A
retrospective bi-lingual catalogue will be printed. All the persons
belonging to the international media community who want to attend/contri-
bute in anyway to the effort of bringing new media in Romania are most
welcome.

DIGITAL SUMMER ART COMPETITION
Digital Summer is a manifestation consisting of exhibitions and workshops,
this summer in Amsterdam, Holland. The Dutch Professional Imaging magazi-
ne, in cooperation with others, organizes an art competition of 'computer
aided images': both computer graphics and image processing. Each artist
can enter a maximum of 5 images, either prints or slides. Max size of
prints: 28 x 35 cm. A jury will select images for two exhibitions to be
held in Amsterdam, one of them being at the Electronic Imaging/Mediavisie
trade show in the RAI congress center (September 13-15, 1993). A selection
of the images will be published in Professional Imaging magazine and
Digital Summer publications. Entries will only be returned if a self
addressed envelop is included, as well as sufficient stamps (Dutch entr-
ies) or money(orders) for return postage.

The International Computer Music Association
1993 VIDEO REVIEW OF COMPUTER MUSIC RESEARCH
CALL FOR VIDEOS
You are invited to submit a video presentation for inclusion in the video
review which is published by the International Computer Music Association.
Appropriate topics include: interfaces, performance systems, instruments,
controllers, and music visualization. Excerpts from performances that have
a unique visual component or historical interest are also eligible.
The review will be published in both NTSC and PAL formats and will first
be available at the 1993 International Computer Music Conference in Tokyo.
Contributions should be in the range of 1 to 10 minutes, ideally referen-
cing ICMC proceedings or other publications for more detail. Potential
contributors should send a brief description of material, including: name,
address, affiliation; videotape format; subject matter and approximate
length by electronic or regular mail to:
Preferred submission formats: 3/4-inch U-matic, and Betacam. VHS will be
considered though it presents significant quality control problems.
Interested contributors should respond soon for further information.

IAKTA/LIST Workshop

Following the 1993 ICMC in Tokyo, Japan, a workshop on Knowledge Tech-
nology in the Arts will be held in Osaka. Osaka is 3 hours from Tokyo by
train, and 1 hour by plane. The workshop is sponsored by the International
Association for Knowledge Technology in the Arts, IAKTA, Inc., Boston, MA,
USA and Laboratories of Image Information Science and Technology, Osaka,

Workshop activities
General Overview :
General Overview on Knowledge Technology in the Arts will be given by
Prof. Otto Laske. In this talk applications of symbolic and connectionist
AI to topics in the computer arts are surveyed. Otto Laske, President of
IAKTA, is a composer and wrote many articles on AI and Music. In this
talk, his latest theory written in Understanding Music with AI (AAAI/MIT
Press) will be mentioned.
Panel discussion / Special Talk :
Panel discussion on AI and art will be discussed by artists and technical
people. Panel members are under negotiation.
L.I.S.T Demonstration/Concert :
In this Demonstration/Concert the latest activities of L.I.S.T, including
multimedia, V/R technology and Computer music, are demonstrated. In the
Concert,interactive computer music featuring Shakuhachi by Satoshi Shimura
of Osaka University of Arts will be performed. In this concert, acoustics
and motions of shakuhachi performances are recognized using sensor fusion
technique and translated into accompaniment music and CG.

CALL FOR HYPERTEXTS AND NON-LINEAR LITERARY WORKS.

"Hypertext Fiction and the Literary Artist" is a research project inves-
tigating the use of the hypertext format by creative writers. The project
consists of evaluations of software and hardware; critiques of traditional
and computerized works, and a guide to sites of publication.
We would like to request writers to submit their works for review. Publis-
hers are requested to send descriptions of their publications with
subscription fees, and submission formats. We are especially interested to
hear from institutions which teach creative writing for the hypertext
format.

INHERENT RIGHTS, VISION RIGHTS
May 26th to June 19th 1993
Cultural Services of the Canadian Embassy, 5, rue de Constantine 75007
Paris France.
Organized in cooperation with ART-EL this exhibition shows for the first
time in France the works of the native Canadian artist lawrence Paul
Yuxweluptun. It includes the virtual reality environment Inherent Rights,
Vision Rights together with paintings and drawings. Inherent Rights,
Vision Rights has been created at the Banff Centre as part of the Art and
Virtual Environments Projects. This work deals with a religious site of
the Canadian Natives. Surrounded by 3D images and sound we behave in
this space as we would do in a "real" one. Paul Yuxweluptun emphazises on
our way of perception (or construction) of Reality and on our relationship
to the Other from a different, "strange", "primitive" culture, using the
very new western technology .

Exhibition of 7 video installations at the Galerie Nationale du Jeu
de Paume, Place de la Concorde, Paris- From April 27th to June 20th 93.
Kuntzel is one of the most interesting French video artist. He has
been working on the theme of the 4 seasons.

Montage consists of exhibitions, symposia, electronic theater and many
other events. ISEA will present a panel on the 'Future of Computer
Graphics', consisting of Yoshi Abe, Herbert Franke, Michael Girard and Wim
van der Plas. One of the main issues will be the collaboration between
artists and scientists as a prerequisite for the development of computer
graphics and electronic art. The panel session will take place on July 28,

scientific paper presentations, round-table panel discussions, the
electronic theater, tomorrow's realities, and the exhibition, several new
programs will premiere. Among these are machine culture, which is an
interactive art gallery, and designing technology, the first show of its
kind emphasizing the role of design in the development of technology.
Another first at Siggraph 93 will be the debut of Multimedia 93. This new
conference will be located with Siggraph and is ACM's first international
conference on multimedia.

ARS ELECTRONICA public VRSOUND-DATABASE
Uploading and Downloading of sounds for the Simulation Room-Mosaic of
Mobile Sound Data, knowbotic research (Winner of Golden Nica for interac-
tive art 1993)
The VR-installation of knowbotic research, 14-18.6.93, housed in the
parking house of the festival-building, has three main areas.
Section one is a sophisticated, walk-in data-base utilising a collection
of sound samples from around the world, which will be used to produce a
virtual 'sound room'. The sound data will correspond to the second sec-
tion, a physical room, where visitors will be able to navigate through the
space with the aid of a mobile ultrasonic sensor and an artificial eye
display and activate the data to a realtime-concert.
The action of the visitors, within this 'virtual organism,' will be
displayed on a video screen shown in a control room area (the third area).
We welcome your participation for the international sound-data-base:
To participate we need from you a 6 second long sound sample, a cultural
statement, reflecting your personal attitude towards the "world".
Please send this via email or ftp (aiff, aif.Z, wave, next formats). All
submitted sounds are available by ftp obelix@khm.uni-koeln.de .
All participants and institutions will be credited in a publicly displayed
database during the exhibition at Ars Electronica.
How to send sound files to KR+cF:
What we need is musical material, verbal sound or noise, which can be
collected in and help to create our virtual space. Your sound sample
should be in mono and about 6 seconds. It might be a good idea to use your
name and country as a file name, e.g. mike_mueller_germany.aiff.
Let us know if anything is not clear.
