However, this organization has maintained that ISEA is promoting technology instead of art, so they have refused our request for office equipment. We have written back, explaining how mistaken they were and questioning why they reached this conclusion after supporting rather generously the first two ISEA Symposia (both took place in the Netherlands). After a very long wait, they finally responded. Their letter simply said: "We hold to our standpoint". Well, we hold to our standpoint, too. Our society and our culture are rapidly becoming more and more influenced by electronic technology. The culture of the 21st century will be 'electronic culture'. We will pursue our aim of promoting artistic use of this technology. We think artists have a role in guiding culture. It would be disastrous, in our view, if art was not part of the living culture. We are glad the ISEA members support our work. But we need you to let us know that you do. Sometimes it can be difficult to continue the fight. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- V2 ORGANISATION Alex Adriaansens Since 1981, the V2_Organisation has been organising activities in 's-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands. It started with the presentation of multimedia art, and up from 1987 focussed on art and technology. In the last 6 years, V2 has established a lively centre for art and technology in 's-Hertogenbosch with three main sections: - Presentation of electronic art. Every year a range of activities takes place with the annual festival `Manifestation for the Unstable Media' as focal point. Actual themes and topics in the field of art and technology are addressed as well. In 1993, the complete program was focussed on `the body in relation to our technological society' and dealt with the problematised body. For 1994, all programs are focussed on `the merging of nature with digital nature'. - Production of artworks. In our workshop, artists can develop more individual oriented hardware and software for their works. The creation of different interfaces will be a focus point for the coming years. - Distribution of information carriers (magazines, books, cd's, audiocassetes, etc.) that can be seen as background information for the activities above. Their catalogue contains about 600 items. From the 1st of May, the V2_Organisation will be housed in Rotterdam. In September 1994, V2 will open its doors at a truly beautiful location, in the Witte de Withstraat, in the heart of the city. The V2_Organisation hopes to establish an interdisciplinary centre that will work together with other institutions in Rotterdam such as ISEA, the Dutch Architectural Institute, the Photo Institute and smaller or- ganisations such as the NOX architects and individual artists. The first real cooperation with ISEA will take place in November, 1994. The V2_Organisation, ISEA, theatre Lantaren/Venster and the design group for interactive media WDS decided to cooperate in the DEAF festival that will take in place in November, 1994. The annual international festival of the V2 Organisation, that would have taken place for the 6th year in 1994, is fully implemented and will serve as a starting point for the DEAF festival. The V2_Organisation and ISEA want to cooperate in future projects in the field of art and technology. NOTE: New address as of May 1st: PO Box 19049, 3001 BA Rotterdam, The Netherlands. "Every work created today is ascribable to a creativity which is by far more concerned with the structures and designs of communication than its actual contents." (Fred Forest, 1985) The first international INTERFACE Symposium took place in Hamburg in 1990. Artists and scientists - Ascott, Flusser, Guenther, de Kerckhove, Kittler, Kriesche, Loeffler, Peitgen, Piene, Weibel and Weizenbaum among others - discussed and talked about the topic of "Electronic Media and Artistic Creativity" (compare the documentation INTERFACE. ELECTRONIC MEDIA AND ARTISTIC CREATIVITY. Editor Klaus Peter Dencker on behalf of the Kulturbehoerde Hamburg. Hans-Bredow-Institut, Hamburg 1992). After INTERFACE 2 "World Images, Image Worlds. Computer-Aided Visions" in 1993, with Emrich, v. Foerster, Illich, Nadin, Nees, Roetzer, Shaw and Zielinski among others (the documentation will be published in the fall of 1994), we intend to hold the third INTERFACE in Hamburg from November 1 to 3, 1995. Once again, artists and scientists are called upon to present ideas, theories, and projects which deal with the possible changes in perception, thinking, expression, and social relationships that are caused by electronic communication systems, and this time with respect to the topic of "NetWorld". Does networked digital thinking take the place of linear thinking? Does the digital universe replace the "Gutenberg-Galaxy" - the book? Will new internationally valid code systems put an end to the confusion of tongues? Do we now need new definitions of communication and dialogicity which are based upon the changed interpretations of time and place and the new man-machine-man relationships? Which consequences for artistic work could result from new communication models? SELECTION OF TOPICS NETWORKS Open, closed, integrated, intelligent, interactive, simulative systems of communication, information, documentation, and publication; multimedia, navigation, participation; neural networks. MODELS Terms, performance, and functions of traditional communication models; outlines, drafting conditions, current approaches, and visions of possible future models. ETHICS AND AESTHETICS Techno-aesthetics of communication, network culture, network mentality; historical "Salon" conversation theories, publicity vs. "officiosity" and "dialogicity"; social and technological rhetorics. INTERFACES Voice-controlled, tactile, sensory network interfaces; man-machine and man-machine-man relationships via networks. DANGERS Deprivation, isolation, and other communication problems caused by networks; new dependencies and the dictatorship of security concepts; "Viruses", "Trojan Horses", and "Logical Bombs" as works of art. Institutes, initiatives, and project groups, artists and scientists interested in actively participating in INTERFACE 3 are invited to submit a written outline of their ideas and projects to the KULTURBEHOERDE HAMBURG, re: INTERFACE, c/o Prof. Dr. Klaus Peter Dencker, Hamburger Strasse 45, 22033 Hamburg, Germany. The deadline is April 30, 1994. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- INTERNATIONAL COLLOQUIUM ON NEW MUSIC RESEARCH Composition, Perception and Performance, Ghent, 20-22 october, 1994 Introduction. We are setting up a project, called Teleeyes, to explore these technologies, looking at them as one might do with a camera, a sheet of paper, or a projector when seen as a medium through which one can make art. Our proposal is: During the first month, we invite people to send us a short message (two paragraphs maximum), in their language of preference, with a description of what they see through a "window" of their choice. Each person is free to decide what his/her "window" is - it could be a room window, an office window, a car window, a tv screen, a washing machine glass, a microwave oven viewer, etc... Each person may send more than one message, and each message may describe a different "window" than a previous one sent by that person. After this first phase, depending on the material we receive, there are several possible developments that we intend to pursue: - Build an installation, a big panel with windows, much like a building facade. In each window, descriptions will scroll slowly over time, similar to the changes in scenery that occur throughout the day in "real" windows. The relative locations of windows, and their contents, will be determined by the contents of the material we receive; - Establish navigable connections between descriptions - there are many possible different effects during navigation; - Create a network of "live" windows - In the panel described above, allow text to change as people send in new descriptions; - Allow interaction between the spectator and the sender of the text; - Create images "evoked" by the descriptions received, to be integrated into the panel; As you can see, the possibilities are endless... If you are interested in participating, SEND YOUR E-MAIL MESSAGE to netart@inf.puc-rio.br. You will receive an acknowledgement, and will be kept informed (if you wish) of the developments. This initiative is led by Sandra Kogut - videoartist, works with video, film and installations since 1984. Currently working in Brazil, France and Japan. She has won several prizes in Festivals in Europe, USA and Brazil. Her last work (PARABOLIC PEOPLE) was made out of the installation of videocabins in 6 different cities where people were invited to have up to 30 seconds alone with a camera. Daniel Schwabe - PhD, UCLA, 1981, Associate Professor at the Department of Informatics of the Catholic University in Rio de Janeiro, has been investigating authoring methodologies for hypermedia systems, and the effective use of multimedia in information systems. MAKE BELIEVE means much more than fairy tales and legends and can be used to explore unreality, pretence and the imaginary. In order to emphasise the strange and fantastic, a new category has been created this year for Manipulated Images, highlighting the possibilities for photography opened up by new technologies. The photograph used to be regarded as an accurate visual record, which the viewer could believe. Recent developments in technology allow images to be radically altered, so that photographs can now challenge the idea of visual truth, becoming a new form of MAKE BELIEVE. The theme of the exhibition is "connectivity and media/interface," and will feature work that employs electronic networks with multiple contributors and sites, and work that incorporates interactivity and other innovative connections among artist, artwork, and audience. The call for proposals is being distributed internationally. A curatorial committee, which will include staff from the Corcoran as well as the Art Gallery will select work which demonstrates maturity of aes- thetic intent, a critical understanding of electronic technology and its impact on culture, and an imaginative exploration of computer applications in the arts. While the impetus for the exhibition comes from the historic domain of the visual arts--art that can be experienced visually--we welcome proposals that incorporate a range of media and modalities including sound, text, and performance as well as image. Artworks which present themselves in traditional "object" form for the wall or floor of the gallery space will be included as well as the progressively ephemeral works for video monitor, crt screen, and on-line transmission. In all cases, however, the focus will be "connectivity and interface/media." Special attention will be given to proposals which include the capacity to reach off-site audiences via networks. Projects focussing on interaction and exchange with schools and/or community groups in the Maryland and Washington, DC region as well as more distant communities are encouraged. Digital Village Related Programming The Digital Village exhibition is part of a larger project (in collaboration with the Corcoran Gallery of Art) which will include a number of interdisciplinary events investigating the role of technology in today's society. A scholarly symposium, guest lectures, multi-media performances, seminars, and workshops will provide contexts for students, artists, scholars, educators, and the general community to engage with the exciting and often perplexing issues which digital technologies have laid at our doorstep. The Art Gallery Exhibition Space The Art Gallery was established at the University of Maryland at College Park in 1966 and has had an active schedule of exhibitions, catalogue publication, student involvement and public events throughout the 28 years of its existence. The Gallery also houses a permanent collection consisting primarily of 20th century prints and drawings from the U.S., Europe, and Japan, traditional African sculpture, and a small number of paintings and photographs. The current 4000 square foot exhibition space was constructed in 1975 specifically as an exhibition space with museum quality environmental and security controls, lighting, and access. The Gallery is run by a staff of four full-time professionals and a number of part-time and student assis- tants. Guidelines for Submitting Proposals to DIGITAL VILLAGE Each proposal should contain: 1. Concept statement of 1 or 2 pages. 2. Description of space requirements; approximate ground plan if an installation. 3. Technical description and requirements including hardware and software; indicate what you would provide as part of the artwork. 4. List of any consumable supplies required by users/viewers during the course of the exhibition, approximately 2 months duration. 5. Description of maintenance and technical supervision required during the course of the exhibition. 6. Visual documentation of proposed work (or similar work which you have previously presented): 35mm slides, photographs, VHS video, sample output. 7. Brief (2-3 pages) resume(s) of artist(s). Both individual artists and collaborative proposals are welcome. Include address, telephone number and e-mail address for each participant. 8. If one or more specific sites are part of a proposal involving networked distribution and exchange, give the name and address of each site, a paragraph description of the institution or group, and the name of the contact person with whom you've discussed your proposal. (If you are making a network-oriented proposal, but do not have specific sites in mind, please simply describe the type of sites and audience exchange you imagine. The Art Gallery has already begun exploring regional connections and welcomes your ideas to be implemented in this context.) Proposal deadline is May 1, 1994. Proposals should be sent to:Digital Village The Art Gallery Art-Sociology Building University of Maryland College Park, MD 20742 Review of proposals and curatorial decisions are expected to be completed by September 1, 1994. If you have technical or procedural questions about the exhibition or the proposal guidelines, please contact Rob Blitz at The Art Gallery at 301-405-2763 or email rb27@umail.umd.edu. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- CALENDAR ------------------------------------------------------------------------- DIGITAL ANALOG March 4 - 20 1994, Puchheim, Austria 'Machinenbilder und Handzeichnungen'.
