ISEA96
Seventh International Symposium on Electronic Art
September 16-20, 1996, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

WELCOME
The ISEA Foundation and the Rotterdam Festivals Foundation would like to
welcome participants to the Seventh International Symposium on Electronic
Art.
The symposium brings together experts on all aspects of artistic
applications of electronic technology in a scientific, creative and
educational forum of scientists, artists, policy makers and all other
specialists in the field of the electronic arts.
The five day event wil loffer lectures and hands-on learning experiences
by international experts on the current state of the electronic arts.
Papers, pannels, poster sessions and round tables, selected by the
International Program Committee, will be presented on the most recent
developments in computer graphics, computer animation, computer music,
video art, interactive art, including CD ROM and Internet applications,
artistic applications of robotics, computer aided literature and dance,
etc. There will be special focus on Networked Art and on education as a
means to bridge the gap between artists and scientists.
Other symposium events will include an art exhibition at the symposium
site, a larger exhibition organized by V2, R96 and the Dutch Photo
Institute, an Electronic Theater, Concerts and Performances.
During and directly following ISEA96, numerous other Electronic Art
events will take place in Rotterdam, ensuring that your visit will be a
fascinating one. The Dutch Electronic Arts Festival (DEAF96), including a
large exhibition, concerts, performances, A Web Site Exhibition and an
Internet project in the Harbour Simulator, as well as the public events
organized by the Rotterdam Festivals Foundation, deserves your special
attention.
The Organizing Committee plans a stimulating and challenging Symposium
where artists, scientists, technologists, curators, writers,
students and teachers can exchange expertise and ideas and come away with
a broadened sense of the potential within their fields. Your
participation is an integral part of the succes of the program and we
look forward to meeting you in Rotterdam, September 16-20.

R96 FESTIVAL 'THE NEW TEMPTATION'
ISEA96 is part of the 'R96' Festival.
Right at the start of the 1996-7 cultural season, Rotterdam Festivals
presents the second edition of a series of new art and culture programs.
The title of this years festival was chosen to highlight the influence of
new media on art, culture and the city. R96 takes place from 19 to 29
September, at several locations in the heart of Rotterdam. During these
10 days, the festival will offer a wide range of activities in all
disciplines, which can roughly be divided into an art program and a city
program.
The art program consists of exhibitions, symposia, theatre, dance and
music performances.
R96 will be programming the remarkable play 'Elsinore", a dazzling gold
version of Shakespeare's Hamlet by Robert Lepage, in the Rotterdam
Schouwburg.
During both weekends, the city program offers a 'behind the scenes' view
of organizations where applications of electronic and digital technology
play a vital role for work and daily life. A city tour leads the public
through the World Trade Center, a Police station, the library,
MarineSafety harbour simulator and Media school. In each location, the
interpretations of a different artist will give new meaning to the
information present. For those who own semaphones, the 'Buzzer Game' is
the perfect guide. In the evening, R96 presents the first 'Non-Audible'
pop concert and a spectacular multi-media party.

ABOUT THE INTER-SOCIETY FOR THE ELECTRONIC ARTS
The Inter-Society for the Electronic Arts (ISEA) is the parent
organization behind the ISEA Symposia.
The ISEA Symposium series was initiated in 1988 by the Dutch Foundation
for Creative Computer Applications, in order to found an international
and inter-discplinary network of artists, technologists and scientists.
The Inter-Society for the Electronic Arts was founded in the Netherlands
between the first and second Symposium.
Since then it has published a monthly Newsletter (both electronic via
E-mail and as a hard copy), coordinated the continuing Symposia and
started national or regional branches. Active branches (both formally
founded or still leading an informal, but active existence) are ISEA-NL,
ISEA-Japan, ISEA-UK, ISEA-Canada, ISEA-Brasil and ISEA-Australia.
HeadQuarters have been located in Rotterdam, but as of ISEA96 they will
move to Montreal, Canada. The idea is to move HQ and secretariat every
five years. The Board of the Inter-Society is chaired by founder Theo
Hesper and is elected by the ISEA members every three years.

ISEA98

UK Bid to Host Major International Event Successful
ISEA - the International Symposium on Electronic Art - will be taking place
in Liverpool and Manchester, UK in September 1998.

Strengthened by the support of the entire cultural infrastructure in the
region, the bid partners of Liverpool John Moores University, Manchester
Metropolitan University and Moviola* have successfully secured ISEA 98 in
the UK.

ISEA 98 will be taking "REVOLUTION/(RE)EVOLUTION" as its theme - from the
industrial to the technological, from the political to the sociopolitical
in acknowledging the failure of the "information revolution" to address the
great divide between the Northern and Southern hemispheres. A Symposium
will bring together a global forum of hundreds of experts, enthusiasts,
entrepreneurs and educators to debate the potentials and pitfalls of
electronic art**. In addition to this, a comprehensive region-wide
programme of events, exhibitions and performances including a dedicated
radio station will attract tens of thousands of visitors.

ISEA 98*** is appropriately located in the North West of England. Over the
past eight years, the region (Liverpool and Manchester in particular) has
become the centre for the commissioning and presentation of electronic
artworks in the UK. The bid partners are united in their resolve to
further this history through ISEA 98; to leave a meaningful legacy for the
nation by consolidating international links with those working in the field
of digital media; and to create touristic and cultural opportunities which
will enhance the profile of the North West region in particular.

Further details about events leading up to ISEA 98 including its official
launch will be announced shortly.

* Moviola is the UK's leading agency for the promotion of electronic media
and organises the largest and most successful international electronic
arts festival in the UK - Video Positive (the next festival commences April
1997).
** For the purpose of the symposium, 'electronic art' is defined as "all
art forms that use electronic technology as an essential prerequisite for
their production".
*** ISEA 98 is supported by Liverpool City Council, Manchester City Council
and North West Arts Board.

HOMESTEAD/La FINCA PROJECT

Explore the possibilities of the Homestead Project

A fascinating, puzzling, thought-provoking "artist's colony in
cyberspace"--that's one way to think of the Homestead Project, a virtual
exhibition of art and texts on the World Wide Web. Paul Hertz of Academic
Technologies at Northwestern University is curator of the project in
collaboration with the departments of Painting and Sculpture at the
Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain. The Department of Radio,
Television and Film at Northwestern University, ARTEC (Advanced Research
and Technological Expansion in Computer Graphics) at the University of
Valencia, and Apple Computer, Spain, are providing technical support for
the project.

The Homestead will be put on line at the University of Valencia in May. It
incorporates work by nine artists from several different countries on the
theme of colonization. The Homestead involves not just the exhibition of
art on the Internet, but design of a virtual exhibition space and
interface. To check out what's currently going on at the site, see
http://omnibus-eye.rtvf.nwu.edu/Homestead/

A series of workshops culminating in a roundtable discussion of artists,
media critics, and other experts (including a virtual reality engineer) on
"The Colonization of Cyberspace" will celebrate the opening of the
Homestead. Hertz will moderate the discussion and will lead a workshop on
creating art on the Web. Proceedings from the roundtable will be added to
the web site.

C. Webb Young, MFA candidate in the NU Radio/TV/Film (RTVF) department, has
also been instrumental in the design of the Homestead Project. Among his
other major work is design of the OMNIBUS:EYE Web site
< http://omnibus-eye.rtvf.nwu.edu >, which focuses on the future of media
production and study on the Internet.

Exhibiting artists include Annette Barbier, Roshini Kempadoo, Richard
Maxwell, Esther Parada, Rejane Spitz, Stephen Wilson, and three of Stephen
Wilson's students from San Francisco State University, Kasey Asberry,
Torrey Nommesen, and Victoria Anne Morawietz.

Hello all,

Thirty days, detailing my latest incarnation(s) of self, have almost
come to a close. Evidence via the internet performance/installation
entitled "This Is The Place" will continue to reside at its current
address for many months with hopes that I may secure permanency and
signifigance through my mediated image(s) and consequent disassociations
with the flesh. Please feel free to conjure me at:

http://chain.syr.edu/~cgrgrad/cary/origin.html

My greatest hopes are to induce sentiment within you all; exceeding far
beyond where my definitive physicality fails. Please do not hesitate in
contacting me or in returning such sentiment...

Yours Always,
Cary Peppermint

MEMESIS - THE FUTURE OF EVOLUTION
http://www.aec.at/meme/symp/

A Call for Participation in the Discussion

We would like to invite you to take part in the Net-Symposium of the Ars
Electronica '96. For the first time the real Symposium which will take place
from the 2nd to 7th September will be prepared in the form of a discussion
in the Net.

The invited guests were requested to write an opening statement as starting
point for the discussion. At the same time everybody else is invited to post
their statements, critics, related material to the open forum
(open-memesis@aec.at).

Participants of the Panel are: Robert Adrian X, Sadie Plant, Richard
Barbrook, Mark Dery, Sandy Stone, VNS Matrix, Arthur & Marilouise Kroker,
Herbert Hrachovec, Francis Heylighen, Derrick de Kerckhove, Karin Spaink,
Paul Garin, Perry Hoberman, Tom Sherman, Konrad Becker, Heimo Ranzenbacher.
The discussion is moderated by Geert Lovink.

The concept for this years' theme was developed by Gerfried Stocker. In his
opening statement Stocker points out that "memes describe cultural units of
information, cognitive behavioral patterns that propagate and replicate
themselves through communication ...the discussion is intended to probe
specific segments of the techno-cultural revolution against the background
of the idea of a "culturally based history of creation".

Starting from this outline the participants are focussing on different
aspects of the theme. Herbert Hrachovec states that "in introducing memes
into the discussion of recent developments in Cyberspace, a less than rigorous
use is made of the relevant concepts. I read the prospect as an exercise in
stretching one's phantasy, risking some interesting and possibly irritating
conceptual displacements in the process."

>From a critical point of view Barbrook noticed that "if memes 'replicate
themselves', what are humans doing in the meantime? We're not the blind
objects of genes or memes. Rather, whether using language or global
networks, humans transform themselves and nature through our own activity.
We are the subject of history - even if it is not always in circumstances of
our own choosing ..."
For Barbrook, machines will always be subjected to men, he rejects the
notion that machines and programms will ever gain autonomy.

Is the metapher of "Memes" a workable concept for artists and scienctists or
just another neo-darwinist ideology which promotes a cynical notion of the
survival of the fittest?
