From its beginning, the museum has used the observations made by scientists and artists as a means of developing a clearer understanding of nature and natural phenomena among its visitors. The Exploratorium's original exhibitry, artworks, and innovative programming are based on a novel interactive approach to experiential learning. On the museum floor more than 650 exhibits invite visitors to make their own discoveries about how their world works. They can blow giant bubbles, look inside a cow's eye, leave their shadows on a wall, or touch a tornado. They can paint with light, explore illusions, or surf the World Wide Web. Since the museum opened, art and science have complemented each other on the exhibit floor. In the words of Dr. Oppenheimer: "Art is included, not just to make things pretty, although it often does so, but primarily because artists make different kinds of discoveries about nature than do physicists or geologists. They also rely on a different basis for decision-making while creating their exhibits. But both artists and scientists help us notice and appreciate things in nature that we had learned to ignore or had never been taught to see. Both art and science are needed to fully understand nature and its effects on people. The art in the Exploratorium is therefore blended with the science as part of the overall pedagogy." Goals of the Residency Program - Provide the public access to the investigative processes used by artists. - Develop new insights and understandings by incorporating the artistic process with other investigative processes. - Enhance the role of the museum as a center of cultural investigation. - Provide a laboratory setting for artist-conducted research which, in turn, adds to the overall creative atmosphere of the museum and provides an intellectual and technical basis for artists. - Initiate internal and public discourse about the relationship among art, science, human activities, and topics related to multidisciplinary and multicultural activities. - Elucidate, by example, the role that artists can play in modern society. Overview of the Residency Program The Exploratorium Residency Program is multidisciplinary in nature and includes a research and development process that may result in temporal works (such as performances, films and videos, workshops, or public presentations) as well as artworks and installations that may become part of the museum's regular collection. There are two distinct residency opportunities, further described below. Experimental Residencies An Experimental Residency is short-term, generally lasting one to two weeks in length. Residency activities are focused on facilitating a dialogue between an artist and the staff, introducing his or her work to the museum. There is no expectation that the artist will develop a physical exhibit or installation during their stay. These low-key, process-oriented residencies give an artist the opportunity to become a part of the Exploratorium community, to discover whether there are mutually beneficial interests between the museum and the artist, and whether the environment is conducive to the artist's working style. These residencies are often used as an experimental phase for potential candidates for the more formal Artist-in-Residence residencies. Artists are provided with a small stipend, round-trip travel to San Francisco, and living expenses while they are at the museum. Artist-in-Residence The Artist-in-Residence (AIR) is a formal residency for the creation of new artworks at the Exploratorium. While still e xperimental in nature, AIR residencies are focused around a formal proposal for a specific artwork or installation. Artists are expected to be in residence for an extended period of time (anywhere from one to six months), to work closely with staff during the research, development and implementation of their projects, and to contribute to dialogue at the museum through informal staff presentations and more formal talks and programs with visitors. AIR residencies are usually structured in two phases- an experimental phase where the artist develops his or her project ideas, and an implementation phase where the final artwork is completed. Contracts are structured such that a residency is reviewed after the experimental phase and can be ended if it is felt the project will not be appropriate for the museum. AIR Residencies provide an artist stipend, travel and housing expenses as necessary, materials expenses for the project, as well as work space and staff support. Selection Criteria for Exploratorium Residencies - quality of concept - quality of past work - ability to communicate - willingness to collaborate and to share new ideas - relevance of project content to other current projects or investigations at the museum - expressed staff interest in the project and artist How to apply Submit a letter of interest to Pamela Winfrey that describes in general terms what you would like to do and, if appropriate, which type of residency you would like to be considered for. Include background information, slides and other supporting materials. If you would like your materials returned to you, please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope. There are no formal deadlines, however much of the curating occurs on an annual basis in October and November. Questions about these guidelines should be directed to Pamela Winfrey (415) 561-0309 or Donna Wong (415) 353-0482. **************** PUBLICATIONS **************** CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO A BOOK OLD BOYS NETWORK The OLD BOYS NETWORK calls for contributions to its new editorial project, provisionally titled: CYBERFEMINISM, Next Protocols - a BOOK with new and controversial approaches to Cyberfeminism. Why? We are in need of a book which reflects the actual (and future) state of the art of thinking about, and inventing, the digital medium in its capacity to subvert cultural practices a cyberfeminist perspective can provide. Verena Kuni (Germany), Claudia Reiche (Germany), Yvonne Volkart (Switzerland), and Faith Wilding (USA), as the editorial group are looking for feminist modes of accessing, queering, transgressing, rethinking or using information based technologies--electronic communication (including command and control), word or image processing, every form of virtuality and simulation, biotechnologies, body politics ... To start the discussion, the OLD BOYS NETWORK offers an outline of some utopian reflections on contemporary Cyberfeminisms, which indicate our special fields of interest, and may suggest debate topics. With the publishers of Autonomedia Books (New York) we hope to create a network of contributions to be published in the year 2000 or 2001. We wish to consider a broad variety of texts and non- textual projects, from experimental to theoretical, activist, poetic, polemical, fragmentary, philosophical, and the like. If you call yourself a woman and are interested in the communicating and debating potential of this CYBERFEMINIST project you are invited to submit proposals. New, unpublished work is preferred. Please email your proposals: 300-500 words, in English by the 30th October, 1999 to the OLD BOYS NETWORK. Contact: boys@obn.org Visit: http://www.obn.org. Please include your full name, postal address, telephone, email address, and a two line biography in your proposal. **************** CALLS FOR PROJECTS AND PAPERS **************** CONSCIOUSNESS REFRAMED 2000 art technology and consciousness 3rd CAiiA-STAR International Research Conference Centre for Advanced Inquiry in the Interactive Arts University of Wales College, Newport, UK. http://caiia-star.newport.plymouth.ac.uk 23 - 30 August 2000 Director: Roy Ascott CALL FOR PAPERS Consciousness Reframed 2000 is a forum for developments in the field of art, technology and consciousness. Built into the architecture of London's newest and most innovative entertainment complex, 'Home', the GMI should be perceived as more of an evolving artwork than an exhibition screen. Part architectural feature, part communications forum; the largest and most dynamic permanent visual interface yet established between cyberspace and the real world. In the first year alone approximately eight thousand eight hundred and sixty hours of screening time will be packaged into themed bundles; from one minute animations to three hour movies. The Foundation for Art & Creative Technology (FACT) is working in collaboration with Big Beat - the people responsible for 'Home' - to commission new work and to curate and programme a wide range of existing work for the GMI. We need your help in assembling material for the GMI. I wondered therefore whether you may be able to recommend artists' work that would benefit from exposure in this context? If you have a showreel or showreels of recent single-channel material that we could view it would help us enormously. We are particularly keen to create opportunities for emerging artists and to ensure new commissioning contexts for established artists, designers and image makers. CALL FOR PAPERS, PERFORMANCES, & INSTALLATIONS Drawing on multiple technical and artistic traditions, many artists and writers of the late twentieth century are exploring the aesthetic and discursive possibilities of digital technologies. New collective forms of cultural production and exchange are evolving from the communication practices supported by the new media. At the same time, theorists and critics are investigating the place of new media artifacts in social, philosophical, and critical contexts. NEXT 1.0 will bring together an international field of practitioners and scholars engaged in the work of making these technologies meaningful for contemporary culture. An academic conference and an artistic exhibition, NEXT 1.0 will represent a unique forum for celebrating and critiquing the techniques, forms, and aesthetics of new media. Scholars and artists working in new media arts, theory, and criticism are encouraged to submit proposals to present their work at the conference. Presentations may be in the form of scholarly papers or presentations; or performance, installations, or sculpture incorporating digital technologies, interactive or digital video, virtual environments, or network-based elements. Conference sessions may combine academic presentations with mediated performances; we encourage proposals which push the boundaries of the traditional conference paper in form and content. CONFERENCE THEMES Creating Content for Interactive New Media One of our themes is to develop alternative approaches to the design of narrativity in interactive digital environments. How can the spatial qualities of the VR units, for example, be employed to create narrative experiences in new and innovative ways? The development of new approaches to narrative design will require the use of a wide spectrum of traditions, genres, styles and disciplines, ranging from theatre to poetry to film. Virtual Connected Communities Human identity is increasingly bound up with machines, thus the need to consider transformations of technology in terms of the changing human machine interface. Extending McLuhan's sense of the medium as message, we are now part of the medium. In a real rather than metaphorical sense, humans are nodes in a connected intelligence and connected communities. Part of a network that produces, receives and consumes culture in new ways. Exploring these virtual connected communities is an important theme for NEXT. Storytelling This theme is based on a number of rather straightforward questions. What is the relationship between writing technology and individuals who use this technology to either write or read? More specifically, how is the experience of a narrative, again for both readers and writers, affected by the particular features, limits and paradigms of a particular "writing machine," such as the type-writer or hypertext? And lastly, how is the notion of reading/ writing communities affected by major changes in writing technology such as the current developments occurring around the phenomenon of the Internet and the World Wide Web? CONFIRMED SPEAKERS / ARTISTS * Monika Fleischmann - Head of computer art activities at GMD - German National Research Center for Information Technology. Monika will talk about MIXED REALITY and her project Murmuring Fields. * Michael Joyce - Author, originator of the genre of hypertext fiction, and co-inventor of Storyspace, software intended for writing non-linear fiction. Michael will present the premiere of his new hypertext novel. * Rafael Lozano - Artistic Director at Telefonica, Spain, Artistic Director of 5CyberConf - and Will Bauer - Inventor of the Martin Lighting Director (virtual tracking system). Will and Rafael will be presenting their telepresent Virtual Reality installation The Trace. * Steve Jones - Professor of Communication, University of Illinois at Chicago. His books include Doing Internet Research, CyberSociety 2.0, Virtual Culture, CyberSociety, and Rock Formations. He is also coeditor of the journal New Media and Society. PAPER SUBMISSIONS Proposals should not exceed 500 words in length. Please indicate which of the above themes your paper falls under. If your presentation requires specific media or technical support (computer or network access, 35 MM slides, videotape, etc.), describe your needs in detail, including specific OS or hardware requirements (Mac OS or Windows 95/98/NT), if appropriate. Proposals should be submitted to electronically to: andreas.kitzmann@kau.se All proposals *must* be submitted in WWW-ready format (ASCII text, or simple HTML code), either as attachments to email correspondence or within the body of the email message. PERFORMANCES / INSTALLATIONS / "NET"WORK NEXT is generally interested in artistic work that advances new concepts of technology, and more particularly in electronic art in which content is directly informed by an understanding of technological theory. Pieces which address concerns related to the above-stated themes will have the best chance of success. NEXT will screen installations, video tapes, performances, games, and anything in-between. Please submit a 2-page description of your project, a 1-page biography, a complete list of technical requirements, plus examples of your work on PAL VHS tapes, PC or Mac CD-ROM, or Audio CD to: Steve Gibson, Artistic Coordinator, NEXT Conference, Media and Communications, Karlstad University, 651 88 Karlstad, Sweden. Please be aware that NEXT has a limited budget for equipment rental. Those projects in which the artist provides his or her own equipment will have the greatest chance of being accepted to NEXT.
