Icograda 2003 Nagoya will be a voyage of discovery, seeking to
define the future of graphic design, delineate the attributes
of the ideal designer, and exploring the role and relationship
between the designer and the environment. The passengers for
this voyage will come together from all parts of the
world - a joining of creative minds, hands-on experiences,
and experimentation.
This congress will be a unique Japanese experience, revealing
both traditional Japanese aesthetics as well as values deeply
rooted in Asian cultures. It will foster a cross-fertilization

The British Council's International Networking Events: Design Education
The purpose of this event is to explore and share innovative
and best practice in design education at further, higher and
postgraduate level. The programme will be based on a very
successful event on the same topic run by the British council
in London March 1998.
The programme will be delivered through a series of
presentations, panel discussions and visits. The visit
programmes will include some of London=92s most significant
design schools, other institutions involved in design education
and at least one design consultancy.

International Conference of Territorial Development

Globalization has given rise to a new relationship to territory
for both people and firms. It calls for analysis on the creation
of more attractive territories and is leading public authorities,
both central and local, to examine their responsibility in
matters of solidarity. As a consequence, all countries are
experimenting with policies that try to reconcile market driven
competition and safeguarding of principles and national cohesion.
The themes selected for 2002 will highlight the involvement of
public and private players in territorial dynamics from three
distinct standpoints; local clusters, territorial restructuring

Tokachi International contemporary Art Exhibition
In the summer of 2002 in Obihiro City, the first large contemporary art
exhibition in Hokkaido/Japan, Demeter, will take place, with Serizawa
Takashi, Director of P3 art and environment, as the General Director.
There will be ten artists or artist groups, each exhibiting on scales
larger than theirsolo exhibitions that took placein the P3 art and
environment gallery.

Artists who have visited Tokachi to learn the characteristics of the place
will create site-oriented installations. Many exhibition planshave already
been proposed, including works that are interactive, refreshing,
comforting, kitschy, and many others that all have high merit.
The main part of the exhibition will take place in a forty-three hectare
racehorse track. There will be many exhibitions in the stables along the
sides of the track. The audience can walk through the individual
exhibition spaces and relax in the cafe, which itself is a work of art.
They can bask in the rest spaces underneath trees, looking up at the sky.
We plan to create a comfortable site where visitors can enjoy the day, just
like being out on a picnic.
Ban-ei horse racing in Obihiro usually takes place in the winter, but there
may be a special "Demeter Championship". Don't miss it!

The work of Dani=EBlle Kwaaitaal and Niels Meulman and is central to the
exhibition bodylogo. Collectively these artists concern themselves with the
links between commerce and the visual arts. An important focus in the
exhibition is the malleability of identity. In this, the body and the logo
are seen as personifications of identity. Even as identity is subject to
change, the exhibition creates a field of tension where boundaries can be
stretched and new visions arise.
Kwaaitaal and Meulman will be showing both old and new work in the
exhibition, supplemented with texts by Rushkoff. In addition, new work will
be presented which arises from the trio's collaboration.

of stories from a workshop I led last summer at a conference in Mexico
on Memory, Atrocity, and Resistance. Exhibition 15 contains 30 submissions
submitted from throughout the world during 2001. The searchable
archive now contains over 2,500 family photographs donated by hundreds
of people. 200 + stories conveying the psychological, emotional,
funny, and often disturbing nature of photographs are posted
throughout the site. Tools are given to submit your photos and/or

LECTURESHIP IN FILM STUDIES AND/OR TELEVISION STUDIES
Applications are invited for a Lectureship to commence on 1 September 2002,
or as soon as possible thereafter, in the Film and Television Studies sector
of the School of English and American Studies at the University of East
Anglia.
UEA is one of the UK's leading universities for Film and Television Studies,
with well-established and popular MA and PhD programmes, a very lively
research culture and BA courses in Film and English Studies, Film and
American Studies, and Film and Television Studies. The Film and Television
Studies sector is highly regarded for the quality of both its teaching
(having received a TQA score of 23) and its research (it was awarded the top
grade of 5* in the 2001 RAE).
We are looking to appoint an outstanding scholar who is also a dynamic
teacher. The person appointed will thus have both a strong research profile
and proven teaching skills. S/he should have a PhD, or be near to
completion, and should have begun to establish a reputation through their
publications or be able to demonstrate the potential for significant
publications. The successful candidate will be encouraged both to develop
their research and to teach and supervise on BA, MA and PhD programmes.
Expertise in one or more of the following would be an advantage: British or
North American television and/or cinema; gender and cinema and/or
television; silent cinemas. Candidates with expertise in other areas are
however encouraged to apply. Staff includes Justine Ashby, Charles Barr,
Andrew Higson, Peter Kramer, Scott MacKenzie and Yvonne Tasker.
Salary will be commensurate with experience, on the Lecturer B salary scale,
=A325,455 to =A332,537 per annum. Interviews are expected to take place in early
July.

Student Media Projects Competition digital sparks 02
For the second time the MARS Exploratory Media Lab of the Fraunhofer
Institute for Media Communication is organising the higher education
competition >digital sparks<. The aim of the competition is to allow a
structured and extensive insight into research and teaching at German
universities and colleges in the above subject areas and at the same
time to promote the next generation of scientists and artists.
All projects submitted will be published online on the Internet platform
netzspannung.org and presented in the form of a virtual exhibition.
netzspannung.org is a dynamic knowledge portal for digital culture which
is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and
developed at the MARS Exploratory Media Lab of the Fraunhofer Institute
for Media Communication headed by Monika Fleischmann und Wolfgang
Strauss. The platform serves as a multi-disciplinary link between media
art and media design, science and technology and communicates the many
different activities in the media culture scene in an up-to-the-minute
information pool.
We are looking for exceptional and groundbreaking concepts and
implementations from the past year in the fields of media art, media

THE DANIEL LANGLOIS FOUNDATION LAUNCHES A CALL FOR RESEARCH
PROPOSALS IN THE PROGRAM OF GRANTS FOR RESEARCHER IN RESIDENCE
Montreal, May 2, 2002 - The Daniel Langlois Foundation for Art, Science,
and Technology is launching a call for research proposals in the program
of grants for researcher in residence. This program being in its second
year, the Foundation hopes to foster critical thinking about how
technologies affect people and their natural and cultural environments.
Following an international competition open to historians, curators,
critics, independent researchers, artists and scientists, the Foundation
will enable two researchers to work in the collections and archives of
the Centre for Research and Documentation (CR+D). The research project
must focus on one of the Foundation's collections; a profile of the
Foundation's collections is available at the following URL:

Twice a year, the CR+D will welcome a researcher for three to six
months. The researchers will be given access to computer and audiovisual
equipment, the Foundation's database and its documentary collections.

Reviewing slides for inclusion in a presentation at the National
Gallery, London. Topic is 'Photo Imaging: Beyond the Surface, toward
Surround and Structure'. The conference is: "Drapery in Visual
Culture: Contexts, Clothing, Corporealities", August 31 - September
1, 2002.
I will include a cross-section of contemporary artists using digital
textile/fiber forms. Emphasis will be on dimensional and/or draped
form, with particular interest in digital printing on textiles.

In Archive Fever, in what in just a few years has already become one of
the most frequently referred to passages in his oeuvre, Jacques Derrida
suggests that electronic media technologies are not only transforming
the process of analysing, communicating and conserving knowledge, they
are transforming the very nature of knowledge. It is some of the effects
of media communications technologies on knowledge, both its form and
content, that we would like to explore in this =91e-issue=92 of Culture
Machine.
The example Derrida gives in Archive Fever concerns psychoanalysis
(although he also refers to literature, philosophy and love letters in a
related passage in The Post Card), but contributions might examine the
effects of different electronic technologies on a variety of fields -
cultural studies, gender studies, politics, history, science, law,
medicine, biology, anthropology, art history - as well as on ideas of
the book, the letter, the university, the library, the art gallery and
the museum, as well as, of course, the archive.
Do telephones, the cinema, radios, portable tape recorders, CDs, VCRs,
DVDs, cell phones, computers, printers, faxes, televisions,
teleconferences, communications satellites, the Internet, the World Wide
Web, hyper-text, e-mail, the e-book, Bluetooth et al produce
possibilities for prosthetically =91improving=92 the performance of our
current disciplinary fields and forms of knowledge (in terms of the
amount of material that can be stored, the speed of production, the ease
of information retrieval, the range of distribution, reductions in
reproduction, distribution and staffing of posts)? Or does our present
=91discourse network=92, to borrow Friedrich Kittler=92s term, contain the
potential to bring such fields and forms to an end? What happens to
teaching, writing and research when the academic gift economy -
recognised through peer-to-peer computing (P2P), open source, freeware
or shareware - is taken as a model for the communication, publication
and exchange of ideas? Or when, as has already been the case with some
contributions to Culture Machine

digital publications stop trying to merely transfer print aesthetics
into an electronic form and start producing texts which are 'born
digital': texts which are not restricted to the book or essay format but
which, as Lev Manovitch maintains, take the database as the 'new
symbolic form of [the] computer age', and consequently 'do not tell
stories=85 don't have beginning or end; in fact=85 don't have any
development, thematically, formally or otherwise which would organise
their elements into a sequence'; or are produced as 'codework', in which
the technical and cultural practices of electronic writing are combined.
Contributions that take advantage of and explore the effects of
electronic media technologies in their form, as well as content, are of
course welcomed. So, too, are those which experiment with the way in
which electronic media technologies may place the very legitimacy of
certain forms of knowledge in question.

Contributing to Culture Machine
Culture Machine publishes new work from both established figures and
up-and-coming writers. It is interactive, fully refereed, and has an
International Advisory Board which includes Robert Bernasconi, Lawrence
Grossberg, Peggy Kamuf, Alphonso Lingis, Meaghan Morris, Paul Patton,
Avital Ronell and Nicholas Royle.
Culture Machine welcomes material from Britain, Australia and the United
States, and is particularly interested in acquiring contributions from
those working outside the usual Anglo/Australian/American nexus that
currently seems to dominate so much of Cultural Studies. Appropriate
unsolicited articles of any length from academics, post-graduates and
non-academics will all be accepted for publication, as will
contributions which respond to or seek to engage with work previously
published in Culture Machine. So-called =91inter-active=92 texts are also
welcomed, as are any forms of contribution that take advantage of and
explore the uses and limitations of digital technology.
Culture Machine publishes one edition of the journal each year, with
Culture Machine 5 appearing at the beginning of 2003. All contributions
to the journal are refereed anonymously. Authors should follow the
Culture Machine Style Manual in preparing their articles
(http://culturemachine.tees.ac.uk).

The International Paris/Berlin festival is a transdisciplinary action,
favoring contemporary creation in different fields: film, video, visual arts
and multimedia, to create a meeting space for exchanges between various
forms of artistic language and their audiences. By bringing together the
diverse mediums of creation and their respective audiences and allowing them
to communicate, the Rencontres becomes an open event in which the
specificities and links between languages and gazes can emerge within
evolving contemporary production.
THE CALL FOR ENTRIES is open for film cycles, 35mm, 16mm, super 8, and
video, without any restriction of length or type ; for installation,
performance, multimedia and sound creation cycles. Proposals are free,
without any limitation of country. All individual or organism can send one
or several proposals to the Meetings' programming.
The next festival will take place in Paris in Autumn 2002, and in Berlin in
Spring 2003. This non-commercial event is organized by roARatorio, a
non-profit organization within artistic and cultural aim.

The next Monaco Dance Forum will take place December 10-14, 2002.
Nijinsky Awards, Dance festival, First Job Audition, Multimedia-forum
exhibition, Dance Screen Competition, professional Market: it will serve for
the second time the world of dance and its professionals: choreographers,
dancers, authors, stage designers, musicians, companies, students,
producers, multimedia and audio-visual artists and producers, programmers...
It will give a larger space to new technologies, conferences, technical
workshops, Tech Lab, Masterclas, exhibition, installations and, of course,
to performances.
In this framework, we launch our second call for proposals =B3Dance and
Multimedia=B2. This year, we have selected four types of projets:
1/ Unpublished softwares for choreographic creation or notation or
virtual/on-line performances or with pedagogical purpose
2/ Staging concepts combining stage and digital technologies
3/ Virtual choreographic works on-line or off-line
4/ Live performances using digital tools (directed to professionals only)
An international jury will select the best 10 professional proposals and 5
school projects concerning the rubrics 1, 2 and 3. Regarding the last
rubric, four live performances selected by the jury, will be presented at
the Monaco Dance Forum. The authors of these selected projects will be
invited to present their works in the exhibition-forum of the Monaco Dance
Forum.

UNIVERSES IN UNIVERSE - Worlds of Art
Information and communication system on the arts
of Africa, the Americas and Asia/Pacific
Dear colleagues and friends,
Together with the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), we have launched a new
information system for cultural exchange. In accordance with the character
of the foundation, it concentrates on the 15 European and 10 Asian ASEM
member countries.
However, the numerous annotated links to institutions, funding programs,
projects, etc., are of interest to all those looking for opportunities or
resources for international cultural exchange.
On 30 March, the first part of this joint project was launched with its
own website:

In this beginning version, you will find ca. 400 links with brief
descriptions (in English, German, and Spanish). Our agreement with the
Asia-Europe Foundation is currently until the end of 2005, and includes
the further development and permanent updating of the pages.

Art Information
Within the framework of CulturE-ASEF, the Asia-Europe Foundation supports
the redesign, updating, and expansion of the Universes in Universe
information system for the visual arts of the 10 Asian ASEM members. We
will publish this second part of the project after the 3rd week in April.
