MAAP '02 "MOIST"
Multimedia Art Asia Pacific
Beijing 23 October - 10 November

This years MAAP Festival moves to Beijing with the festival theme
"MOIST" an evocative adjective suggestive of  humidity; life; growth;

a first kiss or a sweaty palm. Postioned in seeming oppostion to the
mechanics of technology, MOIST will explore artists emotive infusion.

The MAAP Festival is a contemporary art cultural event that explores
the nexus of art and technology across a range of art forms and
practices emphasising interactive multimedia, net art, digital video,
video installation, and projects integrating new media.

Since MAAP's inaugural festival in 1998 it has been based in Brisbane
and Online presenting an annual festival and regional satellite
events with a mix of support from government, corporate and
educational sectors.Unprecedented support is emerging from our hosts
in Beijing and we look forward to an exciting event that will attract
the attention of Chinese and international key audiences. This year

Exhibitions at Le Fresnoy, Centre National de la Photographie and
Musée d'Art Moderne de Lille Métropole
September 21 - December 1, 2002

3 exhibitions, both curated by Régis Durand; they will take place
simultaneously at the three institutions. The project aims as showing
the complex and fruitful relationship between these two forms of
expression (Image and text) Which bringing together gives an
extremely productive reflection scheme. The history of this
relationship oscillates between the allegation of their irreducible
differences - images belonging to a different order than language -
and the study of their convergent and complementary elements, which
are as obvious as their differences.

Each place, according to its own specificity, will be showing one or
several aspects of the theme. In the Centre National de la
Photographie, each artist will represent one possible approach of
this text-image relationship. In Le Fresnoy, there will be works
having a link with cinema and video installation. In the Musée d'Art
Moderne, it will be a thematic and historical approach.

The consultation space, conceived by Jean-Louis Boissier, Professor

First exhibition at ICC to show the condition and relation of
software and art: "Art.Bit collection"

June 21 (Fri) - August 11 (Sun), 2002
10:00am-6:00pm
closed: Mondays, August 4 (Sun)
Venue: NTT InterCommunication Center [ICC] Gallery A, B
http://www.art-bit.jp/

In the art world, a work of art is called an "art piece." The word
"piece" designates a thing that actually exists, but since software
creations exist only as binary data, calling them an "art piece"
doesn't suit well. Substituting "bit" for "piece," we have decided to
call such a work an "art bit."

The "Art.Bit Collection" exhibit brings together and displays works
that explore software possibilities in this sense -- programming
language (especially visual programming language and language
environment software for computer music), network community (software
available on the Internet for creating and exhibiting artwork),
software for visualization for the World Wide Web, new application
software, and interactive works. Although we cannot perhaps say that
these art bits have as yet evolved into major works in this sense, we
can say that each of them contains a "bit of art" that shows
extraordinary creativity.

Netherlands Institute for Media Art, Montevideo/TBA
The Pleasure of Language
August 24 - September 28 2002
Opening: August 24, 17.00 hrs

Brandon LaBelle, Péter Frucht, MEZ (Mary Anne Breeze), Netochka
Nezvanova & Jaine Evans, Imogen Stidworthy

The popularity of chatrooms on the internet and the speed of
electronic mail have led to an enormous growth in communication, and
with it, changes in the use of language and the creation of countless
vernaculars. The Netherlands Media Art Institute organises from
August 24 untill September 28 The Pleasure of Language. In this
exhibition the artists are concerned with language in various
manners. By employing new technologies a number of works
reflect the body of thought and ways of working of artists at the
beginning of the last century - like Hugo Ball, Marcel Duchamp and
Theo van Doesburg -, placing these ideas in a contemporary
perspective. The artists respond through image, text and sound to and
participate in the ways language-use as well as the communication
process are changing.

Ojo de Liebre. Artworks with Global Technologies by Andrea di Castro
http://www.imagia.com.mx/graficae.htm

This is an ongoing project by Mexican artist Andrea di Castro that is
creating a layer of virtual drawings around the earth following the
movement of the artist wherever he might be. The artist's movement
becomes the drawing. Creating his own air, sea and land paths by
using nature as canvas. Also, for the plot the artist can take
advantage of highways, lake contours, seashores, rivers, etc. Using
global technologies such as Internet and GPS (Global Positioning
System) that allows a very precise register of the paths into visible
shapes, a series of large scale virtual drawings, measuring several
miles in size are being made.

The progress of the project can be appreciated in real time by data
transmitted from their points of origin to museum and gallery spaces
to be seen in computer screens or transferred via plotters into
prints. In this site you can watch the development and the final
graphics of the plots.

Di Castro's work has been exhibited at the Centro de Imagen in Mexico
City these past months.

As Internet media mature the focus of their development shifts away
from visual design towards underlying content relationships and
behavior logic. In this new paradigm content becomes more fluid and
malleable - originating from many sources, moving in multiple
directions, temporarily assembling in one context, then dissolving
and reforming again in another. The emergence of this new dynamic
carries with it great implications for artmaking.

On one level art can be seen as an expression of relationships
between ideas through which it explores personal and social contexts,
questions popular assumptions and raises critical concerns. This view
resonates well with a technical model which combines the responsive
nature of software with relational database structures and the
communication capabilities of the Internet. As a new production
framework, it offers artists endless opportunities to create dynamic,
interactive work imbued with behavior, association and memory which
reaches a global audience.

The art sites in the dataland programme were produced during an
extended workshop which explored these key capabilities. Each site
transforms technical constructs into a personal reflection on such
basic human concerns as behavior, identity, memory, relationships,
community and social control. They demand the participation of you,
the audience, to bring them to life and create the dialogue
anticipated in the sculpting of their social spaces. They are waiting
for you online, patiently.

Introduction to the Website "Blurting In A & L" online

The website of Art & Language within the website of ZKM (Zentrum f—š?
Kunst und Medientechnologie, Karlsruhe, http://www.zkm.de) presents
the lexicon "Blurting in A & L" (1973) in an online version
(http://blurting-in.zkm.de) because a translation into hypertext is
feasible: Michael Corris and Mel Ramsden noted connections between
408 entries/annotations/blurts by other American members of Art &
Language as well as themselves. The connections can now be presented
as links between different webpages. The website includes articles
which contextualize "Blurting in A & L" within the activities of the
group in the seventies. Present and former members of Art & Language
(Michael Baldwin, Michael Corris, Philip Pilkington, Mel Ramsden)
summarize and reflect on their activities. Thomas Dreher embeds
"Blurting in A & L" within the proceedings of the discourse of Art &
Language. (...)

The Videobrasil Authors Collection Project

The Videobrasil Authors Collection Project fills a unique gap in the
memory and reference of electronic art in Brazil. Launched in 2000,
sponsored by the Dutch foundation Prince Claus Fund, in partnership
with SESC São Paulo, it brings a series of documentaries that record
in an original way the life and career of contemporary artists who
have unquestionably contributed to the debate and advance of the
electronic arts. "Certain Doubts of William Kentridge" and "Rafael
França, Work as Testament" are the first two titles; the third
documentary is already in production , directed by Alex Gabassi,
Fabiana Werneck and Marco Del Fiol. Release is planned for October
this year.

The chosen artists are the duo Maurício Dias & Walter Riedweg, who
have been exhibiting in biennials and shows around the world,
such as Artecidade Zona Leste, the 25th São Paulo Biennale and both
Venice and Istanbul Biennials, in 1999.

Associação Cultural Videobrasil is a non-profit organisation, which
puts forward events and projects in order to expand the artistic
possibilities within the panorama of electronic arts in the Southern
Hemisphere. It promotes the creation of multimedia works,
performances, seminars and screenings in video projection rooms,
galleries and museums. It undertakes every two years the VIDEOBRASIL
INTERNATIONAL ELECTRONIC ART FESTIVAL and produces annually
documentaries for the VIDEOBRASIL AUTHORS COLLECTION series.
