Over the last 7 years the Muestra Euroamericana de Cine, Video y Arte Digital (MECVAD) has been one of the leading events on critical media art in Latin America, being held in Buenos Aires (Centro Cultura Rojas, University of Buenos Aires). The MECVAD VII plans to address the new audiovisual panorama along with the wars of this new millennium. It includes homage to Jean-Louis Comolli and Antonio Muntadas, two important references in the mediatic and audiovisual fields. Other participants to this event include Alan Fleischer, Lev Manovich, Patricia Morán, Joachim Sauter and Peter Weibel.

From 18 to 22 September takes place in Ancona the first edition of BananaRAM, the Italian Net.Art Festival. Five days of new Art at the historical Mole Vanvitelliana, that will host installations, performances and debates that target to present to a mass audience the Internet Art experiments, well known as Net.Art. The Internet Art, thought to be enjoyed in the immateriality of cyberspace, welcoming in this case the challenge of the real space through installations and live performances. Artists will present works and they will talk about their research; the debate leit motiv is the relationship between Net.Art and unconscious needs.
Artworks will offer a wide view of Net.Art possible approaches: from the special browser Netomat of Maciej Wisniewski (exhibited in 2001 at Whitney Museum of New York), to the wap broadcasting from Los Angeles streets by Joey Krebs, also the virus biennale.py by 0100101110101101.ORG, created for the Biennale d’Arte of Venice 2001. The epidemiC], a software art group who will show their new work: the peer to peer AntiMafia, while Nekada presents Community Mapping. The Italian group Limiteazero show up with an interactive installation called Active Metaphore. There will be British group Thomson & Craighead, the Spanish Retroyou known for his impudent videogame deconstruction and The Church of Software who presents the preview of the SoftAid a beta version of their humanitarian help software.

The current policy fashion for creating elite Centres of Excellence that aim to foster innovation overlooks the importance of productive practices that are distributed, emergent and not so centralised. These might be called 'Networks of Excellence'.
The fibreculture 2002 'Networks of Excellence' conference will take on the questions of policy, production, aesthetics, politics and ethics of new media and the Internet, looking at the relationships between local and distributed modes of innovation in new media fields. It will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art from Friday November 22 to Sunday November 24, 2002.
Fibreculture 2002 aims to bring together fibreculture mailing list participants (and lurkers), including academics, educators, policy-makers, activists, artists and others with an interest in new media and the Internet in Australasia.

MEDIA CENTRAL is a series of free monthly forums devoted to contemporary media issues, presented by Macquarie University's Media Department. MEDIA CENTRAL will feature lively and engaging discussion in a relaxed environment. The forums will fall under the umbrella of 'media' and be both interdisciplinary and accessible.

Manila, Philippines - We're getting ready for DMF2002!
Digital Media Festival, now on its third year, celebrates through "pag-uugnay", connecting, the fields of archaeology, anthropology and new media art.
The highlights of DMF2002 are the new media installations that will be constructed by students in the digital art elective and workshop courses through collaboration with the Archaeological Studies Program and Filipino visual artists known for their interdisciplinary work in the fields of archaeology and anthropology of art and religion.
There are also plans to partner DMF with the annual Fine Arts Week, thus DMF2003 will be celebrated in February next year. In anticipation of this, the digital media artists' talks, workshops and video screenings will be held in February 2003. DMF invites artists to submit proposals for workshops, forums and exhibitions/performances.
DMF2002 opens October 1, 2002 and runs until October 5, 2002 at the Corredor Gallery of the UP College of Fine Arts. The Corredor Gallery, as representative of the oldest school of fine arts in the Philippines, is a major art venue in the country.

In a half-day theatre style presentation, the New Visions Forum considers collaborations between artists and industry, and how they have uncovered new possibilities that neither could have dreamed on their own.
The New Visions Forum imagines a future where artists are acknowledged as an essential ingredient for good business and investigates successful partnerships from fields as diverse as virtual reality, mining, film, and biology. The borderpanic project brings together artists and thinkers working on current preoccupations with geopolitical and metaphorical borders. Borderpanic is a co-production of the Performance Space, Sydney, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and Next Five Minutes 5, Amsterdam.

DEBATES & CREDITS is an attempt to find possibilities for artists to enter into a direct dialogue with mass audiences by intervening with a series of artist projects in public space; both the physical public space as well as the public space of the media. The project aims to mobilise the creative potential of art, which is a priori based on a critical attlic space as well as the public space of the media. The project aims to mobilise the creative potential of art, which is a priori based on a critical attitude to reality, to find appropriate tools for artistic invention that can address problems of life in contemporary society by means of electronic media.
For "Debates & Credits" 4 artists / collectives from the Russian Federation and 4 artists / collectives from the Netherlands have been invited to develop art projects that operate at the intersection of media and public space. These artists represent a new generation that is no longer interested in the heritage of the former "underground" in the east, or the anaemic neo-conceptual art spaces of the west. The new generation concerns itself much rather with media, with the dilapidation of the cityscape, streets and facades littered with aggressive advertisement campaigns, which particularly in the streets of Moscow have acquired a "special quality of their own". This generation is no longer satisfied with clinical spaces, isolated art spaces disconnected from the rest of society. They seek new places where they can manifest their presence: electronic media - television and internet - billboards, advertisement campaigns, posters, public space and urban architecture, are transformed into new surfaces and media that can carry their poetic and political messages.

From Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd September 2002, Darklight Digital Festival once again brings to Ireland the best in new digital cinema and artworks.
Darklight screens short-films, documentaries, music videos, feature films, and animations - innovative films that utilise digital technology in their production. The Digital Hub sponsors Darklight 4.
Darklight 4 will take place in an exciting new city centre venue, the former Lee's Cash n' Carry building on the corner of Thomas Street and Crane Street, (neighbours to the Storehouse and Media Lab Europe, and the Digital Hub). There will be clear location markers on the day for those who are not familiar with the site it is a ten minute walk from Dublin castle /Dame Street. For one weekend, this impressive space will be transformed into a cinema and gallery: a perfect home for Darklight's eclectic and busy series of events.
SELECTED HIGHLIGHTS OF DARKLIGHT 4 INCLUDE: a specially created installation from DECAL, the WORLD PREMIERE of Glen Dimplex Award-winning artist Paul Rowley's feature film AS LATHAIR, the latest in cutting-edge digital art, short films and MOTION, a selection of new music videos. Darklight 4 will look at the theme of 'regeneration and new generations', with it's CROSSING OVER programme, Rob Nilsson's SCHEME 6, a short programme of films produced and directed by NCAD and the Educational Unit at the Department of Justice for Portlaoise Prisoners, this programme will also look at work which deals with the issues of immigration, and emigration out reach projects, there will be an open forum discussion to tie in these ideas during the day.

The Electrofringe Festival is an annual gathering of young, creative media makers from across Australia and overseas, and is now in its fifth year. The festival will be held from October 3-7 in Newcastle NSW, Australia's largest regional centre as part of This Is Not Art. Electrofringe consists of free workshops, performances, discussions, installations, video screenings, Cd-Rom exhibits and live netcasts as well as a series of professional development workshops for emerging new media artists.

NUEVA / VISTA presents in Germany an exhibition based in the increasing number of local productions from the expanding video art scene in Latin America. The concept of this exhibition is to make a critical revision of todayƒPs proposals on electronic arts made in Latin America taking a completely new way to look at its creative processes by defining it in more global ways.
These means that this exhibition will not be seen as the exhibition of the ŒotherƒP, but as a way that will allow the public to do an analysis of their reality in contrast to other realities using similar communicational aesthetics and languages, but in different contexts. In addition to the focus of NUEVA / VISTA on Peruvian video art, the exhibition also introduces other interesting artists from South-America, which also define their works in a more globalistic new view of the 21st-century Latin America.

Produced and directed by Stan Wijnans, "Frozen White" is a technically elaborate mixed media performance which addresses states of being and becoming: what would happen if people incarcerated in medical institutions were suddenly able to control a liberating technology? Against a stunning video backdrop dancers emerge from comatose rigidity to a state of utter abandon, shadowed by a restless musical improvisation. Utilising the Soundbeam Ultralight Sensor System the dancers colour and influence the live music and determine its atmosphere. Their dramatic ascent into consciousness is both uncanny and ecstatic - and their increasingly assured grip on the mechanisms of control offers a fascinating study of empowerment.

The popularity of chatrooms on the internet and the speed of electronic mail have led to an enormous growth in communication, and with it, changes in the use of language and the creation of countless vernaculars. The Netherlands Media Art Institute organises from August 24 untill September 28 The Pleasure of Language. In this exhibition the artists are concerned with language in various manners. By employing new technologies a number of works reflect the body of thought and ways of working of artists at the beginning of the last century - like Hugo Ball, Marcel Duchamp and Theo van Doesburg -, placing these ideas in a contemporary perspective. The artists respond through image, text and sound to and participate in the ways language-use as well as the communication process are changing.

These new tools and means of support enrich the digital medium with their own ability to feel, process, and respond - in a word, to interact. The interactivity provided by technological art awakens the senses and breeds responses.It does away with the idea that the digital medium is cold and inaccessible. Emotions ensue. Artificial ones.
Digital culture is the theme of Emoção Art.ficial, an exhibit organized by Instituto Itaé Cultural in 2002. The event draws special attention to media centers - laboratories that investigate the use of technology as applied to art. ItaECultural has invited 14 such labs from around the world to show their works and research & development methods.
In order to participate, the artworks had to present three characteristics: they had to be multidisciplinary; relate art, science and technology; and kindle an emotional link with the viewer. The result was a selection of 38 artworks, which are displayed with different supports and in various formats. Surprising works of art, which transcend technology and the artificial realm.

The exhibition Klosterstrasse/Berlin is situated in a unique place in the centre of Berlin, near Alexanderplatz. Franziskaner-Klosterkirche in Berlin is originally a Franciscan monastery church. The oldest parts of it were built in the 13th century. In 1945 the church was severely damaged in air raids. The ruins of the church have been preserved as a park. Since 1987 the roofless monastery church and its surroundings have been used as an exhibition space. After the fall of the Wall, since 1992, the activities have been organized by a supporting association, F‹š„erverein Klosterruine e.V.
The Finnish artist Jukka Vikberg was invited by F‹š„erverein Klosterruine e.V. to create a contemporary exhibition in that magnificent space. Dennis Summers will be exhibiting digitally created prints, digital animations and an interactive website at a group show of digital art at the Birmingham Southern College in Birmingham, AL. USA. The show opens September 6 and closes September 27. Work will include the first print of a series devoted to The Crying Post Project; the website of the same name, his award winning 3D animation based on "The Large Glass" by Duchamp, and more.
Associated with that exhibit Summers will also be a visiting artist at BSC on September 23 and 24.
"The Crying Post Project" website is officially up and running, even though it is and will always remain an unfinished project. Creative Time is pleased to announce the opening of Consuming Places. From an installation of sounds collected from the Brooklyn Bridge to telescopes that reveal messages inscribed on the City skyline, the artworks in Consuming Places connect New York City's historic character with ephemeral technologies, respond to the increasing overlap between public and private spheres, and entice us to ascribe meaning and value to both social and urban space.
Internationally acclaimed architects, artists, and designers, Asymptote, Bill Fontana, Greyworld, Marjetica Potrc, and 212box, have created site-specific works visualizing spaces that defy typical physical boundaries and examining the emerging virtual and physical spaces that are radically changing our experiences of the urban environment.
The exhibition will be located on Water Street, between Main and Dock Streets in DUMBO, Brooklyn. Open to the public August 15 - October 27, 2002, Thursday through Sunday, 1 - 6 p.m. Admission is free.

"Paradise", a large-scale interactive installation created by the iKatun collective and based on Dante's Paradise will be running at the Boston Center for the Arts' Leland Center from September 18 - 25.
iKatun's Paradise is based on Dante's Paradise from the Divine Comedy, however, iKatun's Paradise is not about perfect morality but about perfect information. iKatun's Paradise alludes to a faultless model of information to which all media systems aspire and a space where entropy does not exist.
Visitors to the Paradise installation walk through labyrinths of white fabric and minimalist soundscapes to reach a large grid of LED lights controlled by a computer program. The LED grid runs patterns of light based on "The Game of Life" [1]. The patterns change and evolve based on the visitor's voice.
Paradise involved the work of more than 10 local artists, programmers, engineers, and musicians working collaboratively over the past ammers, engineers, and musicians working collaboratively over the past year. Paradise will be presented at the Boston Center for the Arts' Leland Center in conjunction with the South End Open Studios weekend and other exhibits at the Mills Gallery and the Cyclorama.

Virtual storytelling concepts provide new opportunities in the development of a new quality of collaborative work environments. Acceptance of applications will be based on the quality of the work proposed for presentation and its relevance to the workshop. Participants will be limited to 20-25 people.
Participants will have opportunities before arriving to the workshop to get to know each other, and become familiar with the topics being presented. We plan to maximize interpersonal interactions by suggesting that workshop participants have lunch and dinner together.

The real relations of women to technology reflect their ongoing rapports to public and political spheres. With electronic progress and the consequent dominance of economic and financial flux, the arena of 'important' work shifts once again to the home, a territory still associated with women. However, if there have been social, cultural and political transformations and a certain disintegration of the frontiers between private and public, how have they manifested themselves in relation to the domestic context? What impacts have these new technologies had in the renegociation of the home's association with public spaces and how are women adapting to these new socio-spatial conceptions? The social dynamics of virtual networks applied to physical conditions (and vice versa), as well as sequential modifications of media spaces are becoming a platform for new artistic, conceptual and communication-based collaborations. What are the emerging definitions and practices of networked communities and prototypical and future lifestyles?
In keeping with its annual theme for the year 2002-2003, Studio XX is seeking submissions for residencies which explore notions of home as related to women's and feminist realities. This conference, the very first of its kind, aims to explore, debate and demonstrate the potential creative opportunities that can exist between performance arts and digital technologies.
With the rapid growth in new media technologies it seems that this is an ideal time for practitioners, industry and educational organisations, from this country and abroad, to come together to share expertise, forge links and be instrumental in disseminating good practice in this new and exciting field. We are looking for key note speakers, as well as practitioners to run workshops, lecture demonstrations and performance pieces.

Call for submissions - interdisciplinary experimental sound event
Deadline for submissions: September 20, 2002
Studio 303 is looking for musicians, noisemakers, performance artists, spoken word gurus, composers, radiophiles - people capable of thinking in surround sound - to participate in this year's Noise from the Dark. Taking place in complete darkness, eight artists/groups will be selected to create & perform short works that explore the spatialisation of sound in an environment where ears supersede eyes. Noise from the Dark is a low tech event with a quadraphonic PA system providing the main source of playback. Artists are highly encouraged to incorporate live elements, acoustic sounds and other independent sound sources into their projects. The maximum duration for each artist/group is 8 minutes. Selected artists must be available to perform both nights (November 22 & 23, 2002).
Submissions should include an up to date CV + a description and recording of the piece (cassette or CD). If a recording of the proposed work is not available, the applicant should include a sample of recent work (video, CD, cassette).

ENCODING ALTRUISM: THE ART AND SCIENCE OF INTERSTELLAR MESSAGE COMPOSITION
On March 23-24, 2003, the second in a series of international workshops on interstellar message design will be held in Paris.
The workshop will focus on two broad themes: first, the interface of art, science, and technology in interstellar message design; and second, how to communicate concepts of altruism in interstellar messages.
Papers addressing other topics related to interstellar message construction will be considered on a space available basis.

Urban Shaman Inc. is seeking a Gallery Director. This is a one-year term position (with possibility of renewal). 25 hours per week. Hours of operation Wednesday to Saturday 11-4pm.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Director will work directly with the gallery Administrator in a non-hierarchical position. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
-Manage and administer the affairs of the galleries to include supervision of staff and volunteers.
-Manage all exhibitions and associated events, including: public relations, contracts, installation and/or associated publications.
-Proven grant writing ability.
-Responsible for fund-raising and budgets.

Successful candidates will have demonstrated research interests in at least one of the following thematic areas:
- Organizational communication : the study of communicative processes such as interactions, discourse, mediation, etc. involved in the various aspects
of organizational life. New developments in organizations such as collaborative work, new modes of organization, governance. Analysis of communication exchanges between organizations and their social and economic partners.
- Philosophy of communication : the study of classical and contemporary communication theories. Epistemological, logical, ethical and/or aesthetic aspects of communication phenomena.
- Inter-cultural communication: the study of contemporary issues of diversity, diaspora, hybridity, metissage and relationships between local, regional, national and international cultures.
- Mediated communication : the study of practices, products and/or uses of media from contemporary, critical and/or feminist perspectives.
The ability to teach quantitative methods of analysis will be considered an asset.
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must hold (or be about to obtain) a Ph.D. in communication or a related discipline and possess relevant research experience in one or more of the thematic areas mentioned above. They will have demonstrated dynamism and creativity in research and teaching. Candidates will have to demonstrate a working knowledge of French within a reasonable period of time.
DUTIES: Successful candidates will be expected to teach theoretical or methodological courses (in French) at undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels, as well as to supervise graduate students, conduct research, publish, contribute to the field and assume administrative responsibilities.

The Ballettikka Internettikka project is a ballet based on html codes and created especially for internet broadcast. Stromajer's project intervenes in the traditional arts, with ballet as the perfect example. His work lives parasitically on that of the establishment thereby questioning traditional concepts.
