VIRTUAL ART: From Illusion to Immersion'
by Oliver Grau

(forthcoming from MIT Press)

See TOUR DATES below

Although many people view virtual and mixed realities as a totally new
phenomenon, it has its foundations in an unrecognized history of immersive
images. The search for illusionary visual space can be traced back to antiquity.
Oliver Grau shows how virtual art fits into the art history of illusion and
immersion and shows how each epoch used the technical means available to produce
maximum illusion from Pompeiis Villa dei Misteri via baroque frescoes,
panoramas, immersive cinema to the CAVE. He describes the metamorphosis of the
concepts of art and the image and relates those concepts to interactive art,
interface design, agents, telepresence, and image evolution. Grau retells art
history as media history, helping us to understand the phenomenon of immersion
beyond the hype.

Doing that, Grau draws on the work of contemporary artists like Maurice
Benayoun, Charlotte Davies, Monika Fleischmann, Eduardo Kac, Christa Sommerer,
Michael Naimark, Simon Penny, Daniela Plewe, Jeffrey Shaw et al.

Oliver Grau is lecturer in Art History at Humboldt University, Berlin, and head
of the German Science Foundation's project on "Immersive Art". He is creating
the International Database of Virtual Art with the aid of the Federal Ministry
of Education and Science. Grau is visiting professor in Linz.

Crossing Arts 2002/3

Crossing Arts is a monthly series of talks organised by CARTE, the Centre for
Arts Research,
Technology and Education, University of Westminster. The series presents
external
contributors from a range of national and international research institutions
alongside
researchers from the University of Westminster. Crossing Arts explores visual
culture and
inter-disciplinary approaches to arts practice. The series focuses on
contemporary arts
response to, and impact on, current affairs, politics, medicine, law,
biotechnology and
telecommunications.

Wednesday March 19th 2003, 6.30pm - 8.30pm

Do we still need curators?
Annick Bureaud
In 1996, Bureaud completed a survey for the French Ministry of Culture on
"Curating, Displaying
and Exhibiting works of electronic arts". At the time it seemed that the
Internet would allow
artists to by-pass curators and traditional cultural institutions. After much
debate in online
mailing lists and forums, the issue now seems less "black & white". In the huge
and noisy
space of the Internet new artist-lead "cultural institutions" have emerged. Who
are the "new"
curators? What is their role ? Do we still need curators?

New Media Arts: Momentum and Critical Mass.
Peter Ride
Are there distinctly new forms of arts curation and management that are being
necessitated and demonstrated by new media practice? This illustrated talk will
explore the ways of working that organisations and artists are developing that
are appropriate to the contexts and opportunities of new technology. Sometimes
this means moving away from conventional model of exhibition/performance and
presentation towards a process based, or even research-structured activity. The
behaviour of organisations is changing as they increasingly operate as agencies
and team co-ordinators. The traditional role of the curator is declining in
relevance and a role as 'creative producer' or 'facilitator' is increasing.
Peter Ride is the Artistic Director of DA2, Digital Arts Development Agency, an
organisation that develops commissions, artist residencies and curatorial
training schemes. Previously he was the Arts Programme co-ordinator for Artec,
the Arts Technology Centre, London (1995-7), and Director of Cambridge Darkroom
Gallery (1992-5).

The Crossing Arts Talk Series events take place in the Portland Hall, University
of Westminster Regent Campus,16 Little Titchfield Street, London W1, unless
alternative venues are listed.

Lanterna Magika, a point of view on Czech technological art of the 20th Century.

As part of the Boh‚mia Magica, une Saison tchŠque en France, l'Espace Electra
offers an exhibition on pluridisciplinary Czech art with the emphasis on
technology and art in their culture. During the era when surrealism and
constructivism were opposed in West-Europe, poetry originated in the Czech
Republic linking modernist utopia and irrational thought bringing on the
beginning of the exploration of the links between art and technology. With the
change of regime in 1989, the sudden access to new
technology allows the research to go even deeper, effecting works of art that
unite utopia, magic and critique of which only magic subsists.

://:://Future Physical WEAR ME!!! Arts & Technology programme and FoAm VzW and
partners bring UK premier of txOom to the Hippodrome Circus Space in Great
Yarmouth.//:://:

txOom [textiles in bloom] is a responsive PlaySpace where wearable architecture
and evolving media worlds blend, engendering a rich and multi-layered
experience. Participants will be able to create and influence their own audio-
visual landscapes as they tangle in textiles and literally wear and expand the
space through their movements and gestures, hence causing physical and digital
worlds to converge and stretch. Each player is sensed by the playSpace using
motion sensors and vision tracking systems incorporated into the fabric of the
space. Gradually, the social interaction between the participants, the
responsive sound and visuals projected throughout the PlaySpace will transform
and grow.

In Great Yarmouth, an important part of the site specific environment is being
developed through interaction with local communities , involving creative user
workshops researching involvement, playfulness, creativity and learning in
responsive environments. (in collaboration with SeaChange)

Hardware 2

November 29, 2002 to Jan 6, 2003

The UP Jorge Vargas Museum
As second of a series held alongside the commemoration of the Centenary of the
Federation of Philippine Labor and the establishment of the Philippine
Independent Church, Hardware 2 presents new projects by a mixed batch composed
of social realists and a fresh generation of socially-engaged practitioners.

Hardware 2 features Nunelucio Alvarado, Pablo Baensantos, Antipas Delotavo, Gene
De Loyola, Leonilo Doloricon, Edgar Talusan Fernandez, Cap Reyes and Jose Tence
Ruiz along with Jes Aznar, Mideo Cruz, Boy
Dominguez, Boyet De Mesa, Emmanuel Garibay, Nonito Pongan, Ronaldo Quiocho Ruiz,
Noe Tio and Jevijoe Vitug. Adding a twist to the mix will be cross-media
practitioners Alfredo Juan Aquilizan, Nelson Ferraris and Ed Manalo . Showing
for the first time will be Danilo Ilag-Ilag, who here collaborates on a large
installation with Tence Ruiz, who also curates the exhibition. On display will
be new installations, digital prints, sculpture, painting, constructions and
opening night performances by Cruz and Ronaldo Ruiz. Hardware 2 follows a series
began in August of this year that looked back to the founding of, among others,
the Union Obrera Democratica in 1902 and theAglipayan Church. By touching on
topics such as labor, trade, religiosity, nationalism, among others, the show
pushes to invigorate a
viewpoint that there should be more to an art exhibit than the manufacture of
interior decor, quaint filipinism or detached formal play.

The show will open at 5:00 pm, Friday November 29, 2002, with cocktails and
performances at The Edge Gallery, UP Jorge Vargas Museum, Manuel Roxas Drive, UP
Diliman Campus, Quezon City. It will run until 6 January, 2003. The Edge Gallery
is open to the public, free of charge, Mondays to Sundays, 8:30 to 11:30 am and
1:00 to 4:30 pm.

NETIZENS
4-22 December 2002
Sala 1 Gallery - Piazza di Porta San Giovanni 10 (Scala Santa
Rome (Italy)

The exhibition, curated by Valentina Tanni, investigates the influence of the
Internet on contemporary artistic research through the work of five artists:
:: Cory Arcangel/BEIGE
:: Elout De Kok
:: Jodi.org
:: Limiteazero
:: Carlo Zanni

The pieces included in the show are all signed by web-born personalities but
demonstrate very different approches, not always tied to the Net as a specific
medium. The World Wide Web can be a tool, a platform, a distribution and
interaction channel, an inspiration source. The gallery space -one of the
first in Europe to give space to the net art world- will host computers,
projections, videogames, installations and oil paintings. The goal of this event
is to show the aestethic possibilities of the Web also to the non-netizens
(cyberspace citizens). Artists become our guides in the 'city of bits'.

Call for Proposals

Established in 1998, Subtle Technologies is a non-profit arts organization
dedicated to investigating the relationships between art, science and
technology. Every May we present the Subtle Technologies
festival at the University of Toronto. This multidisciplinary event invites
artists, scientists, technologists and theorists to discuss, demonstrate and
exhibit their work. The festival is an opportunity to explore areas still
searching for definitions, explanations and meaning. It is our goal to have a
varied program to provide a forum for the cross pollination of ideas.

2003 Programs Seeking Proposals

General Symposium: Throughout the three days of presentations, we aim to cover a
wide variety of subjects. In the past, topics addressed include quantum physics
, quantum computing and other unconventional computing technologies, music,
dance, consciousness research, holography, animation, genetics, sonic
explorations, sensing systems and devices, social systems, complexity theory,
and artificial intelligence. The programming of the general symposium is shaped
by the submissions of
each year and is meant to broaden the scope of disciplines or areas of research
for those who attend. People who have attended the conference remark that
although the individual topics at the conference are extremely interesting it is
often the threads that are woven between the various presentations made by
speakers from varied disciplines that make the conference a unique experience .
We strongly encourage interested applicants to submit proposals that are outside
the topics mentioned above if they feel their proposal fits into the general
mandate of the festival. Please visit the archives at:
http://www.subtletechnologies.com to acquaint yourself with the history of our
programming.

Ground:
This year we will also be presenting a themed session during the
conference."Ground? is a program exploring new technologies in architecture and
urban planning. Topics may include but are not limited
to, intelligent buildings, smart materials, alternative energy systems,
surveillance, the effect of architecture on traffic flow, architecture and its
affect on mood, organic architecture and nano-structures.

Criteria
The festival is open to the public and presentations must be accessible to a
non-specialized audience.
Each presentation is 40 minutes, followed by a ten minute question and answer
period. It is strongly recommended that parties interested in submitting a
proposal visit our archives at http://www.subtletechnologies.com to get a better
idea of our programming. Presenters are responsible for paying for their
accomodations and transportation to Toronto. All presenters receive an
honorarium and their conference registration fees are waived.

Deadline for Proposals: January 15, 2003.

How to Apply
Please follow these instructions carefully to ensure accurate and timely
consideration of your proposal. Proposals must include:
Cover Sheet (see directions below)
A one page proposal or summary of your presentation
Your C.V. or resume ( no longer than 3 pages)

Theme

In the politico-geographical arena, heavily charged with oppressive discourses,
how does one raise courageous and bold voices, voices which dare and act in the
drifts of cyberspace? How does one practice resistances, not according to
parameters imposed by others, but by those originating from the ingenuity of
individuals and networks, based upon a necessary and critical solidarity, and a
desire to counter domineering dogmas and regimes? In continuity with its
critical investigations on women and their appropriation of technologies, Studio
XX focuses on subversive acts by 'intelligent agents' and cultural hackers who
push for original languages in order to redefine the stakes in question.

>From such acts come questions on notions and protocols of access, the numerous
strategies that women use to invest virtual spaces and to impose their own
realities. The possibilities evoked in the proposed examinations include
programming languages, hacking, frontiers, privilege, open source, accessibility
and transgression.

There is also question of alternative customs and uses, nonetheless valuable and
born out of the economic divide which widens increasingly; localised strategies
which mix into the composition of immediate, polymorphic and planetary
phenomenas. Living flux and new alliances, mobile in the magma of active data,
behind which we discover these operators, resolutely insolent, active agents,
radical and free...

web site, <http://www.dimagemaker.com/>, along with the first two issues, for
download as PDFs.

The new December issue contains a profile of digital artist David Ho, product
reviews and lots of news. The January issue will be up on the web site on
December 20th with a profile of Christopher Barnaby.

The first issue had a profile of Steve Danzig. The second had a profile of Joel
Seah.

New Media people please note. With the January issue we wish to add more
material on 'new media' digital art. I'll be adding appropriate news items that
get posted to us but we also need well written pieces of any length (well, up to
around 6 pages) covering any aspect of digital art and related issues. We can't
pay yet, but it does provide you with a new venue and a lot of people will read
your work. Plus you'll be listed as a contributor. We don't mind how opinionated
your pieces are, so long as they are well written and have something relevant to
say that advances the discussion of digital art.
